The Bear Facts
Collecting Teddy Bear ephemera is a very big collecting area.
Teddy bear figurines have been very popular over the years and very early examples are very desirable indeed and can certainly fetch big figures when they come to auction.
Highly collectable these days, are carved figures of 'real' bears.
In days gone by (perhaps before the teddy bear was created) wooden bears were cuddled and used as toys for children, which is one of the reasons why Richard Steiff wanted to create a 'lovable' bear, a bear that children could take to bed and cuddle up with.
These days, however, most wooden and metal bears are used simply as decorative items.
Many wooden bears have been incorporated into useful items, however, including umbrella stands and pieces of furniture.
